Sri Muthumariamman Temple is dedicated to Mariamman, who is known to be the goddess of rain and fertility. The temple was built back in the year 1874, in a plot of land which was originally a paddy field. The regal temple complex was destroyed during the anti-Tamil riots which took place in the year 1983. However its original grandeur has since been restored.
The majestic Gopuram of the temple, which is known as the Raja Koburum, is its central feature. With a height of 108 feet, it is one of the largest Gopurams in Sri Lanka. There are 1008 statues of Hindu gods and goddesses sculpted in it. It effortlessly displays the finesse of the handiwork of the famous scultptors of Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka who worked tirelessly to create this astounding masterpiece.
